The Poor Baker meets Baked and Delicious

** Competition Alert**

I admit that I am a poor baker and by poor I don’t mean broke, I mean pretty average. I admit that my baked goods will never be suitable for Masterchef, ok?

I was lucky enough to get my hands on the 3rd part of the new Baked and Delicious magazine that is now available in newsagents. You know, I think it has converted me.

This isn’t just a magazine, it’s actually more like a recipe book. The cover is firm, unlike a magazine, and you won’t find articles about rubbish. Instead, you’ll find nothing but recipes and gorgous full page photos of the finished product.

three

In edition 3 there are recipes including a decadent sachertorte, tarte tatin, traditional scones and even pizze dough. It’s a great mix of sweet and savoury recipes. In fact, the one that really caught my eye was for olive, herb and parmesan loaf and they must have known something because it’s the central recipe and it has step by step pictures to guide me through.

One problem with not being a baker – a serious shortage of cookware.

But I didn’t mention the best part, did I? The magazine comes with it’s own silicone cookware. Each edition brings you a new piece. How lucky was I that the piece that comes with this edition is just the right one for my loaf? The Lemon Drizzle Cake is also made using the loaf tin so guess what’s next on my culinary adventure?

Baked & Delicious is a new fortnightly magazine packed with recipes, from international classics to traditional favourites, and this magazine brings the very best of baking to today’s cooks. If you would like to subscribe you can do so via the subscription page on the website.

You can buy the magazine from your local newsagent but if you love to cook I recommend subscribing. That way you won’t miss out on any of the editions, nor will you miss out on the silicone cookware that will build up your kitchen tools.

This is a quality magazine that will become a great resource for cooks and wannabes.

Keep your eye out on Cherry Mag for an upcoming competition where a lucky reader will win a years subscription!

Taste of Sydney -a review

By Food Writer and Food Critic Brian Steel

Crisp Wagyu Beef with Mushroom and truffle foam; 12-hour braised lamb shoulder with pea and feta salad; Acquarello risotto of beetroot and gorgonzola; dark chocolate and coffee ‘Barbajada’ with almond crumble … This is not the degustation menu at one Sydney restaurant, but only a few of the choices at this year’s Taste of Sydney Festival. For the third year, a small patch of Centennial Park was converted into an outdoor ‘do-it-yourself’ degustation arena showcasing some of the best restaurants in Sydney, and bookended with high-end providores, wineries and intimate presentations, demonstrations, and discussions. This is a one-stop-shop to eat and drink your way around the Sydney and regional gastronomic experience. The festival ran from Thursday to Sunday, and each afternoon and evening session lasted four hours.

dnh-0072Entry is $25-30, after which you must buy books of ‘Crowns’ – the festival currency. These can be purchased in books of 10 and 30: each dish at the restaurant stalls ranges from 8-12 crowns, so for a book of 30 Crowns you can manage a starter, a main and a dessert. My advice – double up on the crowns and pace yourself to experience a range of superb quality cuisine that you will rarely find in one place.

The setup is reminiscent of the duck seeming to glide effortlessly across the pond when underneath it is all frenzied energy. The restaurants that sign up for this event expend tremendous amounts of energy, time, and creativity in the process. Imagine trying to plan how to feed more than 2500 people up to three small courses, when all you have is a kitchen tent about 3m squared. In some cases, this could involve converting up to 300kg of wagyu beef and 20 suckling pigs into thousands of identical dishes of the same high quality. Indeed, these same chefs may only have the ability to serve 50 to 70 people a night in their own restaurants. Of course, you never get a hint of all this, as the friendly and efficient staff fronting these tents serve you fully plated, aesthetically pleasing dishes that easily match eating in the best restaurant in the city. There are many food and wine festivals in Sydney throughout the year, but this is the flagship, if your passion is centred on high-end cuisine, in an intimate setting surrounded by likeminded people. And the overall value is unbeatable.

Last year, Taste of Melbourne was in the Royal Exhibition Building in August, so keep your ear to the ground and sign up for the newsletter to get in early for the tickets.

Borne Naked Bag Liners

q2I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the quality of the Borne Naked bag liners.  They are really well made of sturdy clear plastic and they have pockets inside them to keep your smaller items safe and secure.

There is nothing worse than fishing around at the bottom of your bag looking for a lipstick, is there?

Somewhere under all those tissues, notepads, cosmetic cases and so on you eventually locate it but there goes a fingernail in the process!

With the Borne Naked liner you can see where everything is because it is clear.  How sensible is that?  With the liner, all you need to do is to put all your necessities into it and then you transfer the whole lot from one bag to the next without losing anything. What a clever invention.  Of course, it makes the excuse “I left it in my other bag” defunct so we will all have to think up something new.

The liners come in 3 sizes so they will fit most bags.  You will be organised and de-cluttered before you know it!

I just have to mention the zipper, too.  I love the little “B” that is the zip tag.  What a lovely touch.

You can win one of two Borne Naked Liners this month. Just check the competition page.

We think this product is so useful that we should all have one.   Definitely a 5 cherry rating winner. 5c1

Escape Mugs by realmums

small__09_10_2007_11_41_IMG_escapeMUGwebSome mornings when you wake up you need something strong to get you going (and I don’t mean your special hottie partner)

This mug is great. I actually own two so that when one is being washed I don’t have to resort to lesser mugs. This is a BIG mug. It holds 380 mls. It has a good square handle that will fit even the shakiest of morning grips.

The cartoon is funny.  “I keep hitting escape but I am still here” is something that every mum will relate to.

Best of all this is dishwasher proof and the cartoon just doesn’t fade. My mugs have been tested and retested and passed with flying colours.

Definitely deserving of its 5 cherry rating. 5c

Roadtesting: New Anti-Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner by Sunsilk

sunsilkI admit that I’m not so great when it comes to looking after my hair. A lack of time and motivation means I reach for whatever products are on hand, leave the house before it is perfectly dry, soak it in too hot water too often; basically my poor hair is mistreated and malnourished. So, like many of you, I suffer from a tragic case of frizz and flyaways which only worsens with Spring’s temperamental weather – wind, humidity, dryness – all exacerbating the issue. So this past month I’ve been road-testing Sunsilk’s recently released Anti-Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner.

Meant for frizzy, curly hair, they pledge to smooth the frizz and tame the flyaways for 24 hours. The shampoo contains your expected gentle cleansers. The frizz fighting ingredients come in the form of silicones which are not for all hair types but in this case they smooth the hair, weigh it down (desirable for the fly-away prone) and also aid in protecting your hair from heat damage if you tend to style it each day. For everyday use this is fine – just make sure to use a clarifying shampoo every now and then to get rid of any buildup (though Sunsilk says this will be minimal) and treat yourself to a intense moisturizing treatment occasionally too. Also aiding in taking care of the frizz is the addition of Glycerin which attracts moisture to the surface of your hair. The conditioner also contains an ingredient (cetrimonium chloride in case you were wondering) that helps to prevent fly-aways specifically caused by static in cold, dry air. The added bonus is that this is unlikely to build up in your hair.

.During my personal test I did find an improvement from the first wash. My hair felt much softer immediately and the fragrance – which reminded me of citrus and apples – was fresh. There’s not  much in the shampoo and conditioner that would be of concern to any but the most sensitive of  skin/hair types. I estimate that my frizziness and flyways improved by about 50% by the next (non-wash) day. So the product has not eradicated the issue completely but my hair is definitely better. For an inexpensive, supermarket brand I’d recommend it is worth a trial for those will a moderate case of unruly tresses

Handbag hangers by Sassi Sam

sassi20sam20pink20175pixWhat a great idea this is.  I don’t know about you, but I find it hard to store my handbags so that they aren’t squashed out of shape or buried at the back of the cupboard somewhere.  I can tell you that I thick coating of dust doesn’t make your bag look any more attractive!

A handbag hanger from Sassi Sam is a great solution to the bag storage problem.   The hanger is 100cm long and 10.5cm wide and is made especially for Sassi Sam.  It is made of 100% cotton and the construction is excellent.   The hanger has an eyelet at the top so you can hang it on a hook somewhere or slip it over the head of a coathanger and hang it in your wardrobe.  It has seven loops which close with a strong press stud.  They will hold large bags easily.

The hanger is well made and strong and I love the pink pattern (my favourite of the designs)   It can hold quite heavy bags.  It could also be used when you have space shortages in your wardrobe – hang your hangers fron the loops and it becomes a portable wardrobe!  It could also hold belts, scarves or even necklaces, too.

I recommend the Handbag Hanger – well made, useful and pretty too.  Grab one from Sassi Sam today.  It deserves a 5 Cherry Rating.

Review- Childsplay Marketing Tool

cardsChildsplay Marketing Cards are a brainstorming tool developed to help business owners free their mind from their usual paths of thought.  They are intended to help you generate new ideas.

The set is made up of three lots of cards which come in a tin box together with an instruction booklet.

Their website says” Every great marketing campaign consists of 3 key ingredients – 1) Target Audience, 2) Special Offer for that audience and 3) A Communication Vehicle to communicate that special offer to your target audience.

Inside your ChildsPlay Marketing pack you will receive 3 decks of cards that correspond with these 3 key ingredients, 50 cards in each deck. Marketing campaigns are easily created by mixing and matching the 3 decks together – it makes marketing ChildsPlay for everyone!

I played around with the cards when I was looking for a way to promote my business that wasn’t going to cost me a lot.  I was hoping to come up with childsplaysomething a little different.

Not all of the Target Audience cards applied to me but the ones that didn’t made me stop and question whether I had really considered my market carefully enough.

I selected three cards to work on then went on to look for the special offer ideas from pack two.  They actually gave me some good ideas.  Set 3 looks at the way you communicate the offer and (to my shame) pointed out a couple of things that I should have done but hadn’t.  They also gave me some new ideas to work with.

These cards are a great tool to get you thinking differently.  If you want something to instruct you step by step then these aren’t for you.  If you want something that will help you to shift your mindset and look for the creative options then grab these cards.  They are well worth the investment.  RRP $69.

Available from Fix My Business.

We gave this a 5 Cherry Rating.  5c

Get Your Brain Going

How active is your brain?  Do you exercise it regularly?   You know, you really should be doing puzzles and crosswords to keep it working properly.

Thinkertoys: A Handbook of Creative-Thinking Techniques (2nd Edition) is a great book by Michael Michalko and it takes brain exercise one step further.  This book helps you to find different ways of thinking by exercising the 2 parts of your brain.  It teaches you ways to look at things differently.  This is great because it gives you a whole new arsenal of problem solving approaches.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to extend their brain power.

Product Review – Joliv Nourishing Hand Cream

Joliv is an Australian business that specialises in handmade products which are free from SLS/SLE and parabens.  They have a great range of products including body products designed specifically for people who suffer from allergies and intolerances.

I was lucky enough to be able to try the Nourishing Hand Cream from their Indulgence range.  My hands are dry from days of housework, laundry (where do they get all those towels from?) and shuffling of paper in the office.  Most creams just can’t keep up with me.

Joliv Nourishing Hand Cream is a rich and beautifully scented product.  It contains palmarosa, lavender and petitgrain essential oils.  The blend of palmarosa and lavender is sweet and balanced out with the petitgrain.  The scents lasts on your skin, too.  The cream is silky to the touch and you only need  a small amount to see the results.  It took two applications before I saw a lasting difference, and believe me, that is fast for my poor hands!  After 4 loads of laundry and a hard day at the office I could still feel the difference on my skin.  Even better, the feeling was still there the next day.  My hands feel smooth and look far younger because the skin is now holding moisture.

I can highly recommend this Nourishing Hand Cream and if this is representative of the Joliv range then we should all go and try their products out straight away.
